Timber and the o-zone layer ?
Climate change caused by green house gas emissions is widely accepted to be one of the greatist threats to the future health of our planet. In Britain the construction and operation of buildings is estimated to contribute as much as 50% of the nations carbon dioxide emissions (one of the main green house gases).
Not only does timber create less co2 in production than other building materials, it also acts as a carbon sink, locking in carbon throughout its life cycle (using 1m3 of wood instead of other materials results in 0.8 tonnes of co2 sequestration).
As trees get older their ability to absorb co2 decreases, therfore it is important to harvest older trees and replace them with new trees. |
